PRESTEIGNE SINGS!
Saturday 30th August, 11:00am. Doors 10:30
The Assembly Rooms, Presteigne
Anyone who sings in a choir can tell you about the 'natural high' they feel both during and after a singing session. This is because the act of singing releases endorphins, serotonin and dopamine – the ‘feelgood' chemicals that lift the spirits. Because we're more conscious of our breathing when singing it also helps release anxiety and increases the level of oxygen in our blood. And the amount of cortisol, the stress hormone, is measurably lower in people who have been singing together.
Singing with other people makes us feel connected, releasing the neurochemical oxytocin (also known as the love hormone). People who sing together report higher levels of general well-being, confidence and even better management of pain and grief. So there's no doubt that singing is good for the soul. But it also has measurable health benefits, enhancing lung function and stimulating the immune system, and it can improve alertness, memory and concentration.
More important than any of these pluses, of course, is simply the pleasure people get from singing together - it's surprisingly good fun, and you don't have to have a great voice to experience the emotional, physical and social advantages. So whether you're a non-singer, a secret singer, or a confident one, do come along with your friends and family and, in a welcoming and relaxed environment, let's hear Presteigne sing!
